If your skin feels tight, rough or dull, the difference between body butter and body lotion matters. Both can support softer skin, but they do it with different textures, ingredients and levels of richness.
What is body butter?
Body butter is a concentrated moisturiser built around plant butters and oils rather than a high percentage of water. Its dense texture creates a comforting layer on the skin and is especially useful for dry areas such as elbows, knees, heels and shins.
Matushka’s organic mango and shea body butter combines mango butter, shea butter, coconut oil and jojoba oil. It is handmade in Byron Bay and designed to melt as it meets warm, slightly damp skin.
What is body lotion?
Body lotion usually combines water and oil with an emulsifier. It spreads quickly, absorbs fast and can feel light enough for warm weather or people who dislike richer textures. Because lotion contains water, it may also need preservatives to remain stable.
Body butter vs lotion for dry skin
For persistent dryness, body butter is often the more satisfying choice because it supplies a richer layer of oils and butters. Lotion can still be useful for quick daily application, but very dry skin may need reapplication sooner.
- Choose body butter when skin feels flaky, tight or exposed to cold weather, air conditioning or frequent swimming.
- Choose lotion when you prefer a lightweight texture or want something that absorbs especially quickly.
- Use both if your skin changes with the seasons: lotion in humid weather and butter through cooler, drier months.
The best way to apply body butter
- Shower or bathe with comfortably warm rather than very hot water.
- Pat the skin so it remains slightly damp.
- Warm a small amount of butter between your palms.
- Massage it in slowly, concentrating on dry areas.
- Give it a moment to absorb before dressing.
Applying to damp skin helps trap some of that surface moisture. Start with less than you think you need; a water-free butter is concentrated and a little goes a long way.
What should you look for?
Look for a short, understandable ingredient list and choose a scent profile you will genuinely enjoy using. Mango and shea butters bring richness, while jojoba and coconut oils help the product glide across the skin. If your skin is reactive, patch test first.

A simple dry-skin ritual
Consistency matters more than a complicated routine. Keep your body butter near the shower, apply it while the skin is still damp and make the process a two-minute daily ritual. On especially dry days, add a second light layer to hands, elbows or heels before bed.
